What to say when a prospect asks “How much does it cost?”

5 min read · Updated November 3, 2026

"How much is it?" is often the first question, and many network marketers have been taught to avoid it: "Let's talk about your dreams first." The prospect notices. Avoiding the price feels like hiding something, and they leave.

Answer first, explain second

The simplest rule: give the number in your first sentence, then explain what it includes.

"Getting started is [amount], and then [monthly amount] if you choose to stay on the monthly package. That includes [what they get]. Some people only buy the products as customers, which is [amount]."

That's it. A real answer, then context.

Separate the three costs

People get confused because "cost" can mean three things. Name them separately:

  • To try the product as a customer. Often the cheapest and least risky way to start.
  • To join as a distributor. Any starter kit or sign-up fee.
  • To stay active. Any monthly order or fee needed to stay qualified.

If staying active requires a monthly purchase, say so up front. People who find out later feel misled, and they tell others.

Don't turn the price into an income pitch

"It pays for itself after two people" is a promise you can't keep for someone else, and in many countries it breaks advertising rules. Talk about what the product does and what the costs are. Let them decide.

Keep the conversation going

After the answer, ask one honest question back:

"Does that fit what you had in mind, or were you expecting something different?"

Now you know where they stand. If the price is the problem, the customer option might suit them. If it isn't, you can talk about the rest.

Be ready when they ask

Prospects ask about cost at all hours. A page that answers it plainly, even when you're asleep, keeps them from going to a search engine and finding someone else's opinion.

On DownlineAI, the AI on your page gives the real prices and then asks what the person is working on, so the conversation continues. Try it in 2 minutes.
